SkyCell publishes third annual Sustainability Report

SkyCell is leading the way in sustainable pharmaceutical transport. As part of our commitment to environmental responsibility and aligning our strategies with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we are pleased to present our 2022 Sustainability Report. This report showcases our policies, actions, and results across three main focus areas: climate, circularity, and cooperation. We are proud to share our roadmap towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, and we invite you to join us on this journey towards a sustainable future for pharma transport.

In the climate section of our report, we detail the ambitious steps we are taking to reduce our carbon footprint. We have established science-based targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2, and we aim to become net-zero by 2040 across our entire value chain. To achieve this goal, we are already taking significant actions, such as using renewable electricity in our production and repair center and optimizing our container design to reduce emissions. Our latest product, the 1500X, has even lower emissions than our previous models, demonstrating our dedication to limit the industries emissions.

We are also taking steps to mitigate currently unavoidable emissions. We have partnered with a major airline to purchase sustainable aviation fuel and have procured CO2 removals through pyrolysis and direct air capture technologies to safely and durably remove CO2 from the atmosphere.

In the circularity section of our report, we describe our circular business model and how we take ownership of our products and lease them to clients. This approach enables us to use high-performance materials and construction methods that depreciate over a prolonged lifetime. Our hybrid containers are reusable for dozens of transports and can be easily repaired in case needed. If a container has reached its end of life, we can reuse parts to build new containers, reducing waste and resource depletion. We also collaborate with research partners to improve the volume efficiency, weight, security, and durability of our hybrids.

Our dedication to cooperation is reflected in how we invest in our employees and value employee development, equity, and safety. We offer a vibrant and cultural work environment that stimulates innovation and provides fair and equal pay based on experience and responsibility. We engage with suppliers and partners, providing reliable and sustainable transport solutions. Our Codes of Conduct and policies are revised yearly, and we have a whistle-blowing procedure that allows employees to report any irregularities anonymously. Our efforts have been recognized with an overall score of 90% in the employee satisfaction survey, certifying us as a “Great Place to Work” for the third consecutive year. We have also received the EcoVadis Gold Medal for the second time in a row, celebrating our efforts to uplift our sustainability management.

Switching to our hybrid containers can lead to a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of pharmaceutical companies. One of our large clients reduced its CO2 emissions by approximately 50,000 tons in 2022 compared to the product it used before SkyCell. These savings are equivalent to the emissions of about 6,300 US homes’ energy use for one year.

While we have made great strides towards sustainability, we recognize that we have a long way to go to operate climate neutral throughout our entire value chain.

We remain committed to this journey, and we invite you to download our full sustainability report and join us on the path towards a sustainable future for pharma transport.
