SkyCell’s journey began 12 years ago, with a simple question: “Can you build a pharma container that maintains +2°C to +8°C even at +60°C on the tarmac in Saudi Arabia?”. This initial challenge drove co-founders Richard Ettl and Nico Ros to develop a 100% recyclable insulation that protected vulnerable medicines, even in the harshest conditions. From that initial commitment to innovation, the drive to push boundaries has continued to shape the company’s mission.
SkyCell then introduced the world’s first hybrid container, merging the strengths of both active and passive systems, enhanced by precision Swiss engineering. Over the years, we continued to refine and improve our hybrid container technology in pursuit of a supply chain with zero product loss.

1500X Hybrid Container: Built for Performance
The biopharma industry loses approximately $35 billion annually as a result of failures in temperature-controlled logistics, according to the 2019 Biopharma Cold Chain Logistics Survey Report by IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science.
The 1500X hybrid container was designed to address and solve one of the pharma industry’s largest problems: ensuring effective temperature control. To achieve this, we looked at where temperature excursions occurred the most. Delays, sitting on hot tarmac, customs clearance, electricity failures and mechanical issues were all large contributors.
With an independently assessed temperature excursion rate of less than 0.05%, the 1500X hybrid container addresses these problems head-on. Designed for door-to-door transport, the container boasts a 270-hour independent runtime, and self-charges in cold-chain environments without any mechanical parts – plugs, batteries, or fans – providing uninterrupted protection and ensuring an unbroken cold chain.
Its double-door system creates a separate cooling chamber, effectively managing humidity levels inside the container. This means medicines remain safe and dry, even when the door is opened.
Additionally, the shock-absorbent feet enable the 1500X hybrid container to withstand up to 63g of force – such as drops from forklifts – while reducing impact to just 7g, safeguarding fragile vials from breakage.

1500X Hybrid Container’s Performance in Action
In a recent 18-day shipment from Melbourne, Australia to Gosler, Germany, SkyCell’s 1500X hybrid containers showcased their performance and reliability under extreme conditions.
After loading the 1500X hybrid containers with sensitive pharmaceuticals, an unexpected scheduling change caused a significant delay, with the scheduled flight not arriving for over a week. This put the medicines at risk due to the prolonged wait. SkyCell worked closely with our pharma partner to plan a new route; however, freight backlogs created further delays.
During this 368-hour journey, external temperatures ranged from a scorching 36°C to a cool 9°C. However, thanks to the container’s precision engineering and self-charging capability, internal temperatures stayed within a tight +/- 1.5°C window and the shipment reached its destination without any temperature excursions.
SkyCell’s SkyMind solution improved operational performance even further by providing risk assessments and regular temperature updates. This enabled our pharma customer to intervene proactively and reroute the shipment, while offering a complete overview throughout the journey.
