SkyCell Launches Net ZERO Reverse: Transforming Sustainable Pharma Supply Chain
SkyCell has introduced Net ZERO Reverse, a groundbreaking service designed to revolutionize pharmaceutical supply chains by significantly reducing carbon emissions. This innovative solution, developed in collaboration with Emirates SkyCargo and another leading airline (to be announced), eliminates the need for returning containers by air, reducing CO2 emissions by over 90% and permanently removing residual emissions.
The Concept Behind Net ZERO Reverse
Net ZERO Reverse uses a one-way airline lease model and ocean freight for returning empty containers, offering cost savings, operational efficiency, and large-scale emissions reduction.
Richard Ettl, CEO of SkyCell
“Pharma supply chains are at an inflection point. CO2e has become a key criterion as companies work toward net-zero targets. Net ZERO Reverse dramatically cuts emissions while improving logistics efficiency and reducing costs.”

How Net ZERO Reverse Works
Pharmaceutical shipments are transported via air in SkyCell’s hybrid containers, which already reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to traditional containers. These containers ensure zero product loss and a temperature excursion rate below 0.05%, guaranteeing product safety.

Once shipments reach their destination, empty containers return via low-emission ocean freight, managed by SkyCell and its freight partners. This method reduces emissions by over 90% compared to the equivalent journey via air freight, according to DECARBONIZE calculations using MIT’s CO2e methodology. Any remaining emissions are offset through high-quality permanent removal projects, achieving net-zero reverse logistics.
For instance, on a Chicago-to-Sydney route, a SkyCell 1500X hybrid container avoids 18 tons of CO2e compared to the RKN and 10 tons compared to the RAP, delivering total savings of 15 to 28 tons of CO2e per pallet.
The Future of Pharma Supply Chains
SkyCell’s Net ZERO Reverse sets a new standard for sustainable pharma logistics by eliminating the need to fly empty containers, simplifying operations, and cutting emissions. On any shipping lane, airlines can avoid the entire return journey’s CO2 emissions.

By offering a scalable, low-cost solution, Net ZERO Reverse delivers measurable benefits for all stakeholders, supporting both operational efficiency and global sustainability goals. SkyCell continues to lead innovation, providing greater value to pharmaceutical clients while advancing the industry toward a more environmentally responsible future.
